With the holidays here, hardly anyone among us is not invited to or hosting a get together of some type.  Between family, co-workers, church functions and friends of all kinds, tis the season to host and attend.  Whether you are making the fare or bringing something to the table  for others to enjoy, the question of what to serve is always one that is asked.  This season I tried something different for one such gathering.  It is simple, it is full of flavor, it is black olive tapenade.

A piece of bread with spread.

About this

The only time I have ever had this appetizer was at a local restaurant specializing in Mediterranean food, here in the Fox River valley of Wisconsin.  It is no coincidence that this fine dining establishment offers black olive tapenade, as it is a popular food in the south of France where it is generally eaten as an hors d’oeuvere, spread on bread.

It is also used occasionally to stuff poultry, when served as a main course.  This rich, olive based spread can be used as an appetizer, served with crackers, crusty bread or crudités. It can also be used as a condiment.  For something a little different than the oft cream based and cranberry laden holiday accompaniment,  give this rich and flavorful spread a try.

Hey Dan. This tapenade looks delicious. I might even try it if we didn’t sell a Black Olive Tapenade in our shop;)
