Turkey Shepherd’s Pie Recipe – If your family is anything like ours, there are always leftovers from Thanksgiving. One of the benefits of living in Wisconsin is that our garage turns into a walk-in cooler this time of year.

It’s never appreciated more than on the days following Thanksgiving. We took some of our many leftovers this year and turned them into something completely new and wonderful.

I’ve had my eyes on Shepard’s pie recipes for a few weeks now. Don’t ask me why. Perhaps I knew that with the holiday season upon us we would soon be knee-deep in mashed potatoes. Classically, this dish is made with lamp or beef. I’m still resolved to make it with lamb some day but with Thanksgiving leftovers waiting to be used, I shifted gears ever so slightly and put this Turkey Shepherd’s Pie Recipe for our family.

Our boys loved this Turkey Shepherd’s Pie Recipe. They are huge fans of pot pie, and one of them described it as a pot pie with mashed potatoes instead of a pastry crust.

That’s a pretty accurate description of this Turkey Shepherd’s Pie Recipe. As with many of the dishes we make, you can call it anything you like. Chances are good that  the adjective delicious will be involved.    -Dan

Turkey Shepherd’s Pie Recipe

Total: 1 hour 10 minutes
Yield: 6 servings

Ingredients 

  • 3-4 cups left over turkey, cubed
  • 1 cup poultry stock or broth
  • 1 tablespoon flour
  • 1 cup frozen peas
  • 2-3 carrots sliced in 1″ pieces
  • 3-4 cups leftover mashed potatoes
  • 1 tablespoon butter, softened

Instructions 

  • Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
  • Prepare deep baking dish with non-stick spray.
  • Using large mixing bowl, combine first five ingredients and stir thoroughly.
  • Place mixture in baking dish.
  • Top turkey mixture with mashed potatoes and spread evenly.
  • Brush butter over top of mashed potatoes.
  • Bake for 1 hour or until potatoes are golden brown.

Notes

garnish with parsley if desired and serve with gravy.

    Such a tasty recipe using leftovers! We love pot pies and shepard pies. So creamy and yummy. This one does indeed look delicious!

  2. How funny: when I lived in Ohio, our garage was our “walk-in cooler” during the winters, too! I miss that! This shepherd’s pie looks amazing! Most delicious way to use up leftover 🙂

    What a wonderful variation. We love lamb and shepherd’s pie — this will be a good way to make it when there is an abundance of turkey. Great recipe.

    Brrrr… Wisconsin?! I don’t know if I could handle that kind of cold! Although I always seem to be running out of refrigerator space, so it would be nice to put my leftovers in garage without a worry! Making shepherd’s pie with leftover turkey is such a good idea. I haven’t made shepherd’s pie of any kind in a while. You’ve inspired me to make sure it gets on the menu this month!
