The weekend started out innocently enough. We, including 5 of our boys and a rather lazy English bulldog named Ellie, headed up to our little cottage on a little lake in the middle of Nowhere, Wisconsin to enjoy a little family time. As the drive progressed, I knew that I didn’t feel just right. What I would find out, very soon, was that I had a kidney stone and it wanted out. Luckily, this “passed” very quickly. Unfortunately, it left me feeling a little down and in discomfort. As I lay on the sofa, I realized that I wanted to do something to turn my mood around. I started thinking about my family and how lucky I really am. So, I thought that I would make a special meal for them. Getting in the kitchen always puts me in good spirits.
I used chocolate instant pudding for my base, but the sky is the limit. Just think of all the different pudding flavors that are out there. You can really create some great and unique frostings. Your friends will think that you are a master baker and that you spent all day preparing such a great dessert. But we will know differently.
Cottage Cake with Whipped Frosting
Ingredients
- 1 cake mix, prepared as specified on box
- 1 3.9 oz instant pudding of choice, I used chocolate
- 1 cup cold milk
- 1/4 cup powder sugar
- 1 8 oz container of Cool Whip or Whipped topping
Instructions
- Prepare the cake mix as directed on box and allow to cool completely.
- Whisk together instant pudding, milk and powder sugar in a large mixing bowl for approximately 2 minutes.
- Stir in the Cool Whip to the pudding mixture.
- If the mixture seems to be a little runny, place in the refrigerator for a few minutes to firm up.
- Spread on cake or cupcakes.
- Enjoy!

Frosting with only 4 ingredients and you can whip it up in minutes? That sounds perfect for me! It looks awesome too!
Less is more! Thanks for the comments!
I’ve never heard of a cake made of instant pudding and cool whip, but it looks delicious! Sorry about your kidney stone, glad it passed quickly though.
Heather the sky is the limit with the flavors of frosting that you make. Please let me know if you make this. I know that you will like it.
Sorry to hear about your kidney stone! Not something I’ve ever experienced, but I do know that can be painful. Hope everything is OK. Thanks for the cake — looks incredible.
Thanks for you well wishes. I think that the worst is over. Thanks for stopping by.
My mother always made that frosting but she used something called Dream Whip. It was sold in powdered form and you added milk to it and mixed it up. My favorite cake growing up was an orange cake poked with green (I mean lime) jello and this Dream Whip/Vanilla Pudding icing. It was always nice and moist and I remember it being delicious. I was in my 30s when she made the last one for me ๐
Lydia, that cake sounds delicious. I know that I have seen Dream Whip at the grocery store in the past. I will have to pick some up and make your Mom’s cake for my family. Can’t wait.
Desserts always pick up my mood! The cake looks like it would do the trick!
Whether I am cooking or eating, food picks up my mood as well. I hope you enjoy the cake!
Wow that looks so yummy! I’ve never heard of a cake like this but I can’t wait to try it out!
Thanks for stopping by. I know that you will love this cake when you make it. Don’t forget a big glass of milk to wash it down.
