What is an air fryer?
Part of what I love to do is talk about food and that involves much more than just recipes! I love to write about questions and answers about anything related to food. Like, what is the difference between broth and stock, why does chocolate hurt my teeth, and even the best ways to harvest thyme?
So today I want to talk about air fryers and plates that can go in air fryers.
An air fryer electrical device that cooks food in hot air instead of oil. It provides a healthier alternative to deep frying and uses a fraction of the oil, resulting in crispier food with fewer calories.
Air fryers have become increasingly popular over the last couple of years for their convenience and ease of use. With one of these, you can cook almost anything from french fries to roasted vegetables- all without added fat or oil!
You can even make a Christmas dinner with one of these, like our air fryer scallops. On the other hand, things like frozen corn dogs in the air fryer are a fast and easy snack for anytime. You can even make chicken BBQ in an air fryer. (It’s incredible!)
The heating element of the air fryer is a lot different from what’s in a microwave, so make sure you read up on air fryer use!
Can I put a plate in an air fryer?
Yes, you can put plates in an air fryer. However, it’s important to take certain precautions to ensure a safe and successful cooking experience. First, make sure your plate is oven-safe and suitable for use at high temperatures.
The plate should not be too large or thick as this could prevent the air from circulating properly and affect the cooking performance of your machine.
Pro Cooking Tip – Place the plate on the wire rack at least two inches away from the heating element to prevent any potential damage.
Types of plates you can put in an air fryer
You can put a variety of plates in an air fryer, as long as they are oven-safe and suitable for use with high temperatures. Some of the most common types of plates used can include:
Ceramic plates – These are usually oven-safe and heat quickly and evenly, which is great for using them in one of these.
Metal plates – Metal can be used in an air fryer but should be checked first to make sure it won’t damage the heating element or other parts.
Paper plates – Some paper plates are oven-safe and can be used in one of these, although you may need to replace them more often if they get too greasy.
Glass or Pyrex dishes – These types of dishes can also be used, provided they are oven safe and not too thick.
Air fryer basket -Use the basket (or racks) that come with your machine!
What can you not put in an air fryer?
- Frozen meats that have not been defrosted.
- Foods with high moisture content like applesauce or soups.
- Large pieces of food that may cause a fire.
Problem with placing a plate in an air fryer
Have you ever accidentally placed a plate in one of these only to find it melting? It’s an exasperating experience that can easily ruin your plans for dinner.
Fortunately, there are several solutions to this problem that can help ensure that plates stay safe from the heat of your machine. Here are some tips for avoiding this common kitchen mishap:
- Don’t rush when placing items in the machine, double check to make sure all objects are securely inside and properly fitted.
- Make sure all containers are designed for use with the specific type of air fryer you have; some containers can be too big or too small.
- Be aware of materials used in cookware; metal, glass, and ceramic should not be used because they can cause even more damage when heated rapidly by an air fryer’s intense heat.
- Place items in the basket carefully to ensure nothing gets dislodged during cooking.
Remove or cover handles on pans or baking dishes before placing them inside.
By following these simple steps, you’ll avoid the frustration of dealing with melted plates and other issues caused by improper placement. Also, along with these tips, make sure you’re not using paper towels either. It’s always a good idea to use what is recommended by the manufacturer.
Can I use paper plates in an air fryer?
When it comes to using paper plates in air fryers, the short answer is no. Paper plates are designed for single use and cannot handle the heat produced by an air fryer. The intense heat can cause the paper to warp and even catch on fire, leaving you with a mess that not only ruins your meal but can also be dangerous!
While some people may think about attempting to place aluminum foil or parchment paper between the food and the basket, this technique does not work either since these materials can easily melt under high temperatures.
For best results, stick with using metal, ceramic, glass, or silicon cookware specifically designed for this method of cooking. If you don’t have any cookware suitable for an air fryer, it’s best to avoid using one altogether.
Top reasons why you should never use paper plates in an air fryer
Placing a paper plate in your air fryer is not the best thing for not only this type of plate or your food. Here are the top reasons why you should never use a paper plate in even the best air fryers.
- Paper plates can catch fire due to their highly flammable nature.
- The intense heat will cause the paper plates to melt, leaving an unsightly mess in your oven.
- Paper plates often contain toxic chemicals that can leach into your food when heated, leaving you with an unsafe meal.
- Paper plates are not designed to withstand high temperatures and may warp quickly in a short time.
- The high temperature of air fryers can cause chemical reactions between paper and other substances, releasing dangerous gases and toxins.
Can I use metal plates in air fryers?
This is a fairly common question for air fryer users. Yes, you can use metal plates in air fryers. As long as the metal plate is heat-resistant and non-stick, it should be safe to use.
Make sure to check for any signs of damage or corrosion before using the plate as these could pose a hazard. It’s also important to note that metal plates may take longer to cook your food than traditional cookware, so you may need to adjust your cooking time accordingly.
It may seem weird that you can use metal plates in air fryers, but you can! Remember that you can’t use a metal bowl or a metal plate in a microwave.
Safe cooking items to use in the air fryer
Here’s a list of safe cooking items to use in the air fryer, with descriptions:
- Cast iron pans – These heavy-duty, durable pieces of cookware can stand up to high temperatures and won’t warp or melt while in the air fryer.
- Non-stick silicone baking mats – These mats are non-toxic and provide an even heat distribution that prevents food from sticking.
- Ceramic plate(s) and bowls – These ovenproof dishes are great for baking or reheating foods in the air fryer. Ceramic bowls are great options for those who don’t have plates.
- Stainless steel trays and baskets – These heatproof containers are ideal for cooking vegetables, fish, and other delicate foods without sticking.
- Heatproof glass bakeware – This type of bakeware is designed to withstand extreme temperatures and can be used safely in an air fryer. Any ovenproof dish should be fine in the cooker.
- Specialized air fryer accessories such as racks, skewers, and trivets- These specialized tools and metal utensils help ensure food cooks evenly and keep it from sticking to the bottom of your pan.
- A silicone plate, steel plates, glass bowl, and glass plates can also be used to ensure you can cook food in the high heat of the air fryer without damaging the structural integrity of the items.
Expert Cooking Tip – The best ways to utilize the cooking process in an air fryer without using harmful chemicals is to use what’s mentioned above. Stainless steel bowls are also a good way to cook items in the air fryer. There are safe plates out there specifically available for your new air fryer.
Air fryer safety tips
- Always use oven mitts or pot holders when handling the air fryer. The exterior will become hot during cooking and can cause burns.
- Place the machine on a flat, heat-resistant surface away from combustible materials such as curtains, cabinets, kitchen towels, etc.
- Make sure the air fryer is not near open flames.
- Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions when using and cleaning one of these.
- Never use metal utensils in one of these, as they can scratch the nonstick coating and potentially cause a fire.
- After use, unplug the unit and allow it to cool before attempting to clean it.
- Monitor the food closely when cooking, as cook times can vary greatly due to differences in temperature, ingredients, etc.
- Never leave one of these unattended while in use, and avoid leaving it on for extended periods.Be sure to clean the air fryer after each use. Grease build-up can lead to a potential fire hazard.
By following these safety tips, you can ensure that this kitchen tool is used safely. Enjoy the delicious and healthy meals you create with your air fryer!
If you are too nervous to use one of these, then stick with using a toaster oven. The toaster oven already has a standard shelf that you use to cook. Toaster ovens can also handle extreme heat!
You can also use the conventional oven, regular oven, or even a microwave. You don’t have to use an air fryer.
If you don’t feel 100 percent safe with understanding how an air fryer works, then use what you know.
If you’re looking for an air fryer for regular use, pay attention to the maximum size you need. If you have a large family, you may need a bigger one.
The air fryer manual that comes with it will have the complete answer to ensure you know what can be used with your one. Learning to use an air fryer and what can and cannot be put into the cooker is worth the time and effort to be able to cook meals quickly.
