Why You’ll Love These Crispy Air Fryer Drumsticks!

Crispy without breading

These air fryer chicken drumsticks develop beautifully crispy skin using just a simple seasoning blend and circulating hot air. The air fryer creates the kind of crisp texture most people expect from deep frying but with far less oil.

Fast and Reliable Weeknight Dinner

The drumsticks cook in about 18 to 20 minutes at 400°F, making this one of my favorite easy air fryer chicken recipes when I want a simple meal on the table quickly.

Simple pantry Ingredients

Everything in this recipe comes from basic kitchen staples like olive oil, garlic powder, smoked paprika, salt, and pepper. Recipes like this are the reason I use my air fryer so often.

Great for Easy Meal Planning

When we plan simple meals, we’ll often rotate these cripsy chicken drumsticks with other quick air fryer favorites like our air fryer scallops recipe, juicy air fryer turkey burgers, or delicious air fryer beef short ribs. These all make great family dinners that won’t heat up the whole kitchen!

Chicken Drumsticks

I like to use skin-on drumsticks for this recipe because the skin gets nice and crispy in the air fryer. Pick drumsticks that are about the same size so they cook evenly. They might need an extra minute or two of cooking time if they are very big. My favorite place to buy chicken is at Aldi. I find it to be plump and flavorful!

Olive Oil

You only need a little bit of olive oil for this recipe. If you use too much, the drumsticks may not get as crispy as they should.

Baking Powder

This is optional, but baking powder is my secret weapon for achieving the crispy finish on these air-fryer chicken drumsticks.

I add a small amount of baking powder because it helps draw moisture away from the chicken skin while it cooks. That little trick helps the skin crisp up more evenly in the air fryer. I use the same secret in these 3-Ingredient crispy Italian chicken wings.

Substitutions and Variations

Different cuts of chicken

You can use this identical approach to cook chicken thighs or chicken legs in an air fryer, even though the recipe calls for chicken drumsticks. Just change the cooking time a little bit based on how big the pieces are.

Change the oil

You can use avocado oil, vegetable oil, or melted butter instead of olive oil. The only purpose is to help the seasoning stick and make the skin crispier.

Change the combination of spices

This easy mix of garlic powder, smoked paprika, salt, and pepper works great, but you can simply change it up by using Montreal steak spice, Cajun seasoning, or your favorite chicken rub.

Add some heat to them

If you like things spicy, add 1/2 teaspoon of cayenne pepper or chili powder to the seasoning mix.

Don’t use baking powder

The baking powder is not necessary; it just makes the chicken skin even crispier in the air fryer. You don’t have to add it if you don’t want to; the drumsticks will still cook up well.

Add Sauce at the end

After cooking, apply BBQ sauce, buffalo sauce, or a honey garlic glaze on the drumsticks and put them back in the air fryer for 1 to 2 minutes to let the sauce set.

How to Make Crispy Air Fryer Drumsticks

The first and one of the most important steps for making chicken drumsticks in an air fryer is to preheat your machine to 400° F. While the air fryer is heating up, you can prep the drumsticks.

Start by patting each drumstick dry with paper towels. Moisture is not your friend if your goal is to make crispy chicken drumsticks in the air fryer!

  1. Apply a coat of olive oil to each drumstick.
  2. Evenly sprinkle a layer of the seasoning mixture to each piece of chicken. Make sure to apply the seasoning to both sides.

Recipe Tip

Use a small mesh strainer when applying the seasoning mixture. This will help give you a uniform covering of seasoning to each piece.

  1. Place the seasoned drumsticks in a single layer in the basket or rack of the air fryer. Be sure they are not touching each other.
  2. Halfway through the cooking cycle (at about 10 minutes), flip each piece and finish cooking until the internal temperature reaches 165° F. (74° C.)

How Long to Cook Chicken Drumsticks in Air Fryer

Most air fryer chicken drumsticks cook best at 400°F for 18 to 20 minutes, flipping halfway through cooking.

Air fryer chicken drumsticks cook time chart
Temperature Cook Time Notes
375°F 22 to 25 minutes Good option for slightly slower cooking with crisp skin.
400°F 18 to 20 minutes Best temperature for crispy air fryer chicken drumsticks.
Frozen drumsticks at 400°F 25 to 30 minutes Flip halfway through and cook until the internal temperature reaches 165°F.

Important: Always cook chicken to an internal temperature of 165°F.

The air fryer works so well for chicken drumsticks because it circulates hot air around the food, creating a crisp exterior while keeping the inside juicy. Over the years, I’ve found that three simple techniques make the biggest difference.

  1. Dry the chicken well.
I always pat the drumsticks completely dry before seasoning. Removing surface moisture helps the skin crisp up instead of steaming.
  2. Cook at a higher temperature.
Cooking drumsticks at 400°F helps the skin brown quickly while the meat stays juicy.
  3. Leave space between the drumsticks.
Air fryers work by circulating hot air. Leaving space between the chicken allows that airflow to crisp the skin evenly.

Sometimes I add a small amount of baking powder to the seasoning. It helps draw moisture away from the skin and can make the drumsticks even crispier.

How to Store and Reheat Air Fryer Chicken Legs

How to Store These

  • To store leftover chicken drumsticks from the air fryer, let them cool completely.
  • Place them in an airtight container and store in the fridge for up to four days.

How to Reheat Chicken Drumsticks

  • Place the leftovers in a preheated air fryer at 375°F for 3 to 5 minutes.
  • Reheating chicken drumsticks works much better in an air fryer rather than a microwave for getting a nice crispy finish on each piece.

How to Freeze Leftover Air Fryerd Drumsticks

  • Put cooked (and cooled) drumsticks in an airtight freezer-safe container or bag.
  • You can freeze these for up to two months.
  • When ready to use them, put them in the fridge overnight to thaw, then heat it up as directed above.

Important Cooking Tip

Allow each piece to rest at least 5 minutes before serving. This will allow some time for the meat fibers to reabsorb some of the liquid, yielding delicious, juicy chicken drumsticks from the air fryer.

Ingredients

  • 2 lbs chicken drumsticks, about 6 drumsticks
  • 1 ½ tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 ½ teaspoons smoked paprika
  • ½ teaspoon baking powder, optional, for extra crispy skin
  • Fresh chopped parsley, optional garnish

Instructions

  • Preheat air fryer to 400°F for 3–5 minutes.
  • Pat the chicken drumsticks dry with paper towels. This helps the skin crisp properly.
  • In a small bowl, mix together salt, pepper, garlic powder, smoked paprika, and baking powder (if using).
  • Brush the drumsticks with olive oil and coat evenly. Sprinkle the seasoning mixture over the chicken and ensure it is coated fully.
  • Arrange drumsticks in a single layer in the air fryer basket, leaving space between them. Cook at 400°F for 18–20 minutes, flipping halfway through, until the internal temperature reaches 165°F and the skin is crispy.
  • Remove from the air fryer and let rest for 5 minutes before serving. Garnish with fresh parsley if desired.

Notes

  • Pat the chicken completely dry before seasoning. Moisture prevents crisping.
  • Do not overcrowd the air fryer basket. Cook in batches if needed.

  • Always use a meat thermometer to ensure the internal temperature reaches 165°F.
  • Let the chicken rest before serving to keep it juicy.
